Dell confirms NVIDIA B200 “Blackwell” accelerator is coming…

Dell executives have partially revealed NVIDIA’s future plans, indicating that NVIDIA aims to launch a new B200 accelerator in 2025, which is noted for its high energy consumption.

The B200 accelerator had not appeared in NVIDIA’s roadmap for the previous year. It’s important to highlight the distinction between the B200 and the GB200; NVIDIA has acknowledged the GB200 as a GPU, whereas the B200 is referred to as a final product.

In NVIDIA’s 2023 roadmap, only the B100 product was mentioned, though the company has already launched the GB200 and GB200NVL GPUs. Despite the absence of an official announcement from NVIDIA regarding the B200 device, a Dell executive has confirmed its existence and anticipates its release next year.

Dell’s COO, Jeff Clark, expresses confidence in their engineering teams’ readiness to handle devices with high power requirements. He discusses the challenges of achieving a 1000W power density, suggesting an upcoming increase in the power consumption of future GPUs and accelerators designed for data centers. He specifically mentions the B200, set to launch next year, as an example. For context, the existing H100 model has a peak power usage of 700W, applicable only to the SXM variant.

“We’re excited about the developments with the B100 and B200, seeing them as a chance to showcase our engineers’ capability. From a thermal standpoint, we believe achieving 1000W energy density on the GPU is possible without resorting to direct liquid cooling. This will be demonstrated next year with the B200. It’s an opportunity for us to showcase our engineering agility and our industry-leading efforts in making liquid cooling effective on a larger scale,” Jeff Clark explained.

Both Dell and NVIDIA have chosen not to comment on these revelations. However, it’s worth noting that NVIDIA plans to host the GTC 2024 conference in two weeks, where the company is expected to unveil its latest data center solutions.
